To conscripts

Defence Properties Finland is responsible for Finnish Defence Administration properties and associated services in all security situations. In garrisons, we take care of the outdoor maintenance, energy services, waste management, cleaning and construction of facilities. Our responsibilities also include barracks accommodation for conscripts and barracks maintenance. We aim to provide healthy, safe and pleasant facilities for conscripts during their military service.

Defence Forces’ barracks

The Finnish Defence Forces has a total of 68 barracks, which were built on average in the 1960s and 1970s. Around two thirds of all barracks have undergone thorough renovation during the 2000s.

Barracks are renovated and new ones built in line with the Finnish Defence Forces’ barracks repair programme. Repair priority depends on building condition. Comprehensive indoor air and condition surveys are carried out on buildings as a starting point when planning renovations.

Even though barracks used for accommodation purposes have yet to be renovated, they have been systematically maintained and repairs have been carried out where necessary. Since barracks also undergo structural, ventilation and building technology inspections every three years, we are also aware of repair needs.

In extensively renovated barracks, ventilation and other building technology have been upgraded and personal military field gear is dried and stored in field gear drying rooms, separate from accommodation areas. There are usually drying rooms for other clothing material near the accommodation. The field gear used by the unit is maintained, dried and stored in separate outbuildings.

For better indoor air

We at Defence Properties Finland work actively for better indoor air. We particularly focus on pro-active measures so that any shortcomings are noticed before any indoor air problems arise.

We also encourage conscripts to give feedback at a low threshold. You can submit indoor air comments to the Finnish Defence Forces through different channels and can also do so anonymously. We process all indoor air reports we receive and always carry out inspections of the property concerned on the basis of these reports.

Have you noticed any problems in indoor air quality?

If you notice or suspect any problems in indoor air, you can report them

- to your superior or the warrant officer of your unit verbally or in writing

- through PVRIPO on the Finnish Defence Forces’ Moodle platform

- or by contacting the conscript committee for your brigade.

Cleaning barracks

During their military service, conscripts learn not only defence skills but also important cleaning skills that are useful in civilian life. Well-cleaned facilities are not only pleasant but also healthy. If surfaces are not cleaned, pollutants that weaken air quality remain in the air. In addition, dirty surfaces more easily spread infectious disease.

indoor conditions and zero tolerance

We want to ensure that everyone who works for Finland's national defence and security has the best possible conditions to do their work well. Healthy and safe indoor conditions in barracks for conscripts doing their national service are a matter of honour for us.
